Right guys, I’m taking the plunge!

When the (very dapper) guys over at The Executive Shaving Company offered some product and – most importantly – knowledge to get me started on my Safety Razor journey, I couldn’t say no.

I’ve heard people wax lyrical about shaving this way (less irritation/ingrowns, closer shaves…) but I never quite bit the bullet. A lot of that was because I didn’t know where to start. So here’s what was recommended as a ‘starter kit’ for me (pictured above).

Taylor of Old Bond Street Grapefruit Shaving Cream – This stuff smells unreal. Honestly the best-smelling and creamiest shaving cream I’ve ever used. I look forward to it every morning post-shower.

Shaving Brush – Works that shaving cream into a thick, slippy, glorious foam. Really dense, scrubs the hair to make it stand up and no shedding.

Muhle R89 Safety Razor – A best-selling product. Simple, precise, easy to use and it shares the slightly vintage charm of the previous two products. Comes with blades.

So, on to the tips!

  • Preparation is important, lots of hot water on the face to soften the bristles before shaving.
  • Lather up in a bowl or on the face, when on the face lather up for at least one minute, to soften the bristles and lift them off the face.
  • The lather on the face should be rich and creamy like an emulsion paint with no runs or bubbles which would indicate too much water in the mix.
  • Shave twice with the grain (normally this will mean shaving down the face and jaw line but up on the throat and neck).
  • Shave using a light touch and short strokes of 25-30 mm at a time.
  • Swish the razor frequently in warm water to keep the blade free of debris.
  • After two passes shaving with the grain, shave against the grain once for a ‘BBS – baby bum smooth’ shave.
  • Finish off by washing the face in warm water to remove all traces of cream then splash the face with cold water to close the pores. Finally, apply an after shave balm or moisturiser.
  • This video is really useful, note the time he spends preparing his face and lathering up on the face, additionally, his shaving technique is very good.

So that’s it! I’ve used it once so far (on a Saturday, didn’t want to go to work with a potentially bloody face).

The results? Guys, this could be life-changing. Or at least shave-changing. It was the longest I’ve ever taken to shave but the result was the most incredibly smooth and irritation-free shave I’ve ever had.

Will it replace my ProGlide for everyday shaving? No.

Will I whip this baby out whenever I have time/need for a spectacular shave? Absolutely.
