Review: Remington Touch Control Hair Clipper

They’re not just for south of the border! Check out the latest from Remington in their (vaguely Iron Man-ish?) promo video.

This new trimmer has a touch control system that allows you to get a perfectly graded cut at home.

Okay I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to hair cuts and doing my own doesn’t sound really appealing. However, I was incredibly glad I had this in my bag last week – I was in New York, landed in the evening and about 30 minutes into unpacking I was told I had to meet someone pretty important.

I had planned to get my hair cut in the morning (it was a mess) so I had a bit of a problem…

In a haze of jetlag, tiredness and one or two (five) glasses of wine on the plane – I decided to cut my own hair using some tips supplied by Remington….

  1. The Nape of the neck: Using the short comb, set to between 3mm and 6mm, to suit your preference. Hold the hair clipper with the blade teeth pointing upwards. Start at the centre at the nape of the neck, slowly working the clipper upwards and outwards through the hair, trimming a little at a time.
  2. Back of the head: With the comb set between 12mm and 18mm, repeat step 1 but cutting hair at the back of the head up towards the crown.
  3. Sides of the head: Set the comb to between 3mm and 6mm to carefully trim your sideburns. Then alter the setting to 9mm and continue to cut in an upwards direction towards the top of the head.
  4. Top of the head: Using the longer length comb attachment set to between 24mm and 27mm. Cut the hair on top of your head, always working from the back of the head forwards. If you want a longer style, simply use the longer length comb attachment on the longest cutting level to achieve your style of choice.
  5. The finishing touches: Remove the attachment completely for an ultra-close trim around the base and sides of the neck.

How did it turn out? Really well!

I followed the instructions above precisely and it looked just as good as a regular cut. The clipper zoomed through my hair with ease so I didn’t have to go over areas twice and wasn’t left with any weird patches.

My only recommendation with this is that it’s better to use the clipper as maintenance so you can follow a rough shape from your previous cut – all that means is that you use it maybe every 2/3 weeks. It’s quick, keeps you looking sharp (with no in-between-cuts days) and it’s free!

The Remington HC5950 Touch Control Titanium Hair Clipper is available from Boots.

You can also buy it from the Remington site where you can get a 1/3 off with this code: TCSAVE.
