Moosehead Gritty Styling Clay

Been a while since the last hair review, hasn’t it?

Moosehead Gritty Styling Clay adds texture to shorter hairstyles. Real pumice gives the clay a grainy texture to help create piecey styles. Beeswax gives the clay a strong hold minus the shine. The beach inspires this light fragrance.

So I came across this styling clay in my hunt to find the best matte-finish hair products – I hate the look of shiny hair, too many flashbacks to using half a tube of ‘wet-look hair gel’ to school when I was a teen…

The good bits? It smells nice, it holds well and it’s probably the most matte hair product I’ve ever seen. Honestly, if shine isn’t your thing – you need to try this.

The bad? Alright, don’t roll your eyes at me but I think it’s a bit too matte. It’s so dry and matte that it gives your hair an almost ‘chalky’ texture. Don’t get me wrong, your hair will look fine but it’s so matte/dry that it’s almost uncomfortable to style my hair with this stuff in it. You know that weird spine-shuddering feeling you get when you rake nails down a chalkboard? I get that same feeling when I run my hands through hair styled with this stuff. Very weird.

Other than that, I don’t really get why there’s any ‘grit’ in this. I tried to capture it in the pic above but there are sparse amounts of crushed pumice stone in this. I don’t think it helps with styling and if you don’t really work this in you end up with tiny visible specks in your hair. Not good.

Overall though, it’s still one of the best truly matte-finish hair products I’ve tried. If you like to go for that shaggy bedhead/rocker look (or just hate the look of shiny hair) this is definitely something you’ll want to check out. Watch out for the grainy bits though! Not sure if i’ll keep using this but it’s nice to have in a pinch, cheap too!
