Review: Dr Nick Lowe The Secret is Out Lifting Cream
Dermatologist ranges are usually incredibly expensive (think Dr Brandt, Dr Perricone…) so it’s great to see an affordable line developed by an esteemed doctor – Dr Nick Lowe! Let’s see how well it performs…
The first product I’ll be reviewing is the Lifting Day Cream SPF 15 from Dr Nick Lowe’s ‘The Secret is Out’ range. Need a day cream this winter? This product might be what you’re looking for!
More than just a superior moisturiser, this multi-benefit, sumptuously rich SPF15 day cream targets several signs of skin ageing. New generation peptides and powerful hydrators work with the Anti Age Cranley Complex to help deliver vital hydration, firming, toning and UVA / UVB protection. With regular use the appearance of skin is left more even-toned, replenished, softer and younger looking.
- Anti Wrinkle + Firming – New generation peptides Matrixyl®, ChroNOlineTM and Argireline® to help reduce instantly, and over the long term, the apperarance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Superior Moisture – Advanced hydrators, Hyaluramine® and Hydralys®, return vital moisture to the skin and encourage skin’s natural collagen production. With time, the skin recovers its supple and elastic qualities
- SPF15 and advanced UVA / UVB protection system – Helps protect skin against cellular damage caused by sun, smoke and pollution
Big claims, how does it measure up?
Texture: This quite a thick, shea-butter based moisturiser. That means it’s quite heavy which is great if you have dry skin or skin parched by the cold weather/central heating at this time of year. There’s absolutely no white-cast to this despite the sunscreen.
How to use it: Apply a good amount (don’t be stingy!) to your face and neck after cleansing and after using a serum if you happen to use one.
How does it perform? Really well! The cream contains a good amount of antioxidants so it’s helping to protect and repair your skin as you wear it. It also contains low levels of peptides which are meant to lessen wrinkles but to be honest I wouldn’t count on that. It’s incredibly hydrating which, as I said, is great for dry skin but that means you won’t want to use this if you have combination or oily skin. The best thing about this is that it contains certified 3* UVA protection which means that it gives you a good level of sun protection. This is the perfect level of protection for the winter and those 3 stars put it miles ahead of 90% of ‘SPF moisturisers’ on the market.
Overall: This is a good sunscreen and a good moisturiser all rolled into one, as good as or a lot better than far more expensive products on the market. The amount of hydration this cream provides huge levels of moisture which, in turn, helps to plump out wrinkles caused by dryness. The antioxidant content in this protects and repairs your skin and the UVA protection is great!
Pretty much all you need in a day cream really – for winter anyway. My only complaints? A pump dispenser would be nice and it’s impossible to use if you have oilier skin without looking incredibly shiny. Still though, recommended!
The Dr Nick Lowe The Secret is Out Lifting Cream can be found for around £25 here.

Shaving Oils
First time comment here. Enjoy the site very much and appreciate the work you put into it.Your reviews are refreshingly honest.
Annoyed that this esteemed doctor has used the word “Lifting” on this jar [No moisturizer should be offered in a jar in 2010!]. No cream, and there are no double-blind experiments offering proof, can “lift” skin. Skin “sags” underneath in the dermis and muscle structure. The ingredients mentioned here provide hydration [as will any modern moisturizer] to the epidermis. It seems that we males are being bombarded with the same voodoo science that females have been fed for years concerning their skin.
Hi Norman, can only agree with your wise words. Cosmetic companies blind us with psuedo scientific info, I’m amazed that in 2010 they are still allowed to get away with it. There are many things people need to know about skin care ingredients, an example is how irritating plant oils can be, that are sold in some ranges as the answer to our skin care problems/concerns, when in fact they only add to them. I can never understand why menthol is added to shaving products as this is highly irritating to the skin.
I have tried Dr Lowe’s eye creams and they bleed into the eye area, didn’t like them at all.
Thanks for the kind words Norman! I think the ol’ Doctor fell pray to a marketing team on that one – unfortunately products that include the word ‘lift’ tend to sell better.
I agree, it cheapens the product by labelling it like that but it’s still a fantastic day cream!
