M Lab is a relatively unknown in the UK but this award-winning unisex skincare brand has been growing leaps and bounds in the US and has recently made a splash here in London with their exclusive at Harrods.

The brand focuses on working with scientists to create potent, effective skincare that’s clinically tested (and I mean proper clinical tests) and innovative. They define themselves as a ‘cosmeceutical’ brand which means they aim to bridge the gap between regular skincare (cosmetics) and pharmacy-grade stuff (pharmaceuticals). Milbar Laboratories (M Lab, geddit?)  has been formulating skincare ‘in the medical market for Dermatologists and Plastic Surgeons for over 25 years’ and I did first hear about the brand from a suitably impressed dermatologist in NYC.

So, can the range deliver on such grand claims? Let’s take a closer look…

I’ve been testing the Anti-Ageing Treatment Serum for about a month now and I must say, it’s quite brilliant (with some caveats). Here’s what M Lab have to say about it:

  • Miracle treatment serum for dramatic results without the needles
  • Provides skin-firming, retained softness, dermal elasticity, and the reduced appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Formulated with 74% clinically active ingredients
  • Fuses peptides, exfoliants and hydrators which help to promote collagen and elastin production, smooth and brighten skin tone, and provide long lasting moisturisation
  • Apply sparingly to face, neck and chest area, focusing on areas that show greater signs of ageing

Let’s keep things simple with a Pros and Cons shall we?

Pros:

  • The packaging is a sleek matte black with a pump – that means it looks good and all the good stuff inside is well protected from the sun.
  • The texture is a light and slightly slimy clear gel. It dries down weightless on the skin. Perfect as a base upon which you can apply your sunscreen or moisturiser.
  • That brings me onto the next point, you can use this day or night. Or both for the full effects! Day under sunscreen and night under your moisturiser.
  • The ingredients list contains 74% clinically active ingredients (M Lab claims to be unique in having such a high concentration) and the ingredients list is quite impressive! The serum doesn’t contain a large amount of fillers and almost everything in there is proven to target a specific skincare issue.
  • A quick glance at the ingredients list (available here with a handy guide) shows that this serum does indeed focus on three main areas; hydration, brightening and anti-ageing.
  • I’d argue that it hydrates and brightens skin better than it does anti-age. In fact it’s fantastic at both of those and it’s been proven that bright, even and well moisturised skin makes you look fresher and younger. The large amount of antioxidants work well to stave off premature ageing caused by the sun (when coupled with sunscreen)
  • Thanks to the potent mix of active ingredients, this works quite quickly as far as skincare goes. A month into use and my tester’s skin looks brighter, more even, sun damage spots are fading and the skin looks a bit less wrinkled (thanks, i’m sure, to how well it hydrates).
  • Because it’s so potent, a single pump is enough for your entire face. Two for your face, neck and chest.

Cons:

  • I like that the serum is so potent but this also means that if you have sensitive skin, you may experience some irritation from this product. If you’re usually sensitive to stronger skincare, you’ll probably experience at least a little redness with this.
  • Most importantly there’s no getting around the fact that this serum costs a whopping £250 ($275). Now that is some serious cash they’re expecting you to throw down, even if a bottle lasts a while. That’s a bit more than £8 per ml. Mental.

Overall thoughts

To be honest, I came into this thinking the M Lab Anti Ageing Serum would be yet another highly priced failure. However, it has totally won me over. This is just a fantastic product, it’s an all-in-one treatment that delivers beyond expectations on each individual front. It’s a good anti-ageing serum, a fantastic brightening serum and a fantastic hydrating serum too. There are very few brands that i’d be willing to spend this amount on (two, in fact) but I think I may be willing to make M Lab a third. I’ll have to try some more out before I give a full endorsement – better start working overtime!

However, is it a must-have? Yes and no. If there’s one thing I try to explain on SCforM, it’s that one needn’t spend a tonne of cash for good skincare. In fact a lot of expensive skincare can be complete failures. You can root around on SCforM for a host of products that’re just as good for anti-ageing, hydrating and brightening. However, the M Lab Anti Ageing serum offers you the best of all three worlds in one highly concentrated, well formulated serum – it takes the guesswork out of finding products.

I say get yourself to a counter, try a few samples and if you like it (and can afford it), buy it! Definitely a must if you want most of your skincare covered with one product, the only other things you’d need along with the M Lab Anti Aging Serum would be a sunscreen to wear over it in the day and a moisturiser to wear over it at night. SCforM recommended.
