Grooming – Don Draper Style

Okay, I’m not going to lie, I tried watching Mad Men but gave up a few episodes in. Does it get any better? Plot aside, this is obviously a very well-styled piece of television and has ushered in an age of 60s throwbacks in tv, fashion, music and just about everything else that’s image-related.

So I thought it’d be cool to write a post on the ultimate Don Draper grooming experience for someone living in horribly unstylish 2010. From grooming products, to fragrance, to hair – I’ve got you covered.

So, firstly you’re going to need the Draper slick-back.

It’s cut close to the head on the sides, tell them to keep the length but take out the weight so it lies closer to your head. As for the top, keep it longer than the sides and as full as possible so it doesn’t lie too flat.

Style. Run a dime sized amount of product through your damp hair using your hands, make sure it’s all evenly distributed. Grab a comb and create a side parting and slick back the sides. Now to create that small wave at the front, push the comb through the front of your hair and lift it upwards. Then, gently, swoop it back so there’s a small wave. This isn’t a step he’d take but a quick spritz of hairspray will keep it in place all day and also allows you to use less product than you usually would. Tilt your head back, shade your forehead with one hand and spray a little hairspray on.

As for products, Brylcreem if you’re going authentic. I hear they use Baxter of California Pomade or Gel on the set of Mad Men though. Go for the pomade if your hair’s a little thin, gel if it’s quite thick.

If you have $250 lying around you can buy this amazing Fusion Chrome set from Art of Shaving. Next, you’ll need a badger brush and a good shaving cream like the old staple Proraso – and you’re good to go! Shaving foams came onto the scene during the 60s but I’d advise against using them, just because they’re not very good.

SKIN1 Grooming Don Draper Style

skin 300x180 Grooming Don Draper StyleAramis domianted the luxury male skincare market in the 1960s. They had eye creams, face masks, moisturisers, astringents and hand creams – all made specifically for men! The modern-day alternative to Aramis skincare would be Lab Series – which, while great, doesn’t really fit the whole retro thing we’re doing – so I’ve opted for retro-styled Art of Shaving instead.

If you cut yourself whilst shaving, just hold their damp Styptic Pen to the spot until it stops bleeding. Then, keeping it very simple, follow up with their Sandalwood after-shave balm which smells amazing; we’re trying to stay away from anything too ‘modern’ and citrus-y here. At night, go for their Ingrown Hair Night Cream to keep your face nice and smooth the next day.

Right, so after much research, I’ve found out that Don Draper was probably an Old Spice kinda guy. However there were some really nice luxury options around during the 60s that would’ve been popular at the time. These include the classic Dunhill For Men (1934), Guerlain Vetiver (1961). and new kid on the block, Aramis for Men (1965).

And that’s it, you’ve got Don Draper’s hair, fragrance and shave. Now all you need are the right threads, a complete disregard for cancer and civil rights and a fancy office! Good luck with that!

Oh, I think Don Draper would’ve worn Guerlain Vetiver, for sure. How fabulous were the suits, too?

I only watched a couple of episodes which wasn’t enough to really get right into it. I know a ton of people who follow the show religiously and one even went out and got the Don Draper haircut.

Great post and I’m liking the blog.
