Product Line Review – Proactiv Solution Core Products (Mild)
![]() |
| Well, either that or you have a LOT of pissed off customers… |
Like many people, I used the Proactiv system for a while in my teens when I had hormonal acne. My experiences with this line weren’t great to be honest; it worked amazingly well at first and then after about a month it had completely dried out my skin and stopped working entirely! Not a fan.
It all boiled down to their benzoyl peroxide formula being far too harsh on my skin and so I ditched it and settled my mild acne with good old BHAs (salicylic acid) instead. Well now Proactiv have come out with a new milder version which replaces the old benzoyl peoxide with the milder (yet still effective) salicylic acid.
Sounds promising, read on to see how I got on with it!
(I’ll preface this by saying that I tried these out on myself at first and then gave them to my acne-prone 16 year old cousin to test afterwards).
Proactiv Solution Renewing Cleanser
• Mild, oil-free formula gently cleanses skin• Tiny exfoliating grains smooth away dead skin cells which can clog your pores• Salicylic Acid penetrates deep into the pores to remove existing impurities and help prevent new blemishes from forming
This is a really nice exfoliator. It feels refreshing on the skin and it exfoliates thoroughly with a lot of very fine grains. It’s a blue coloured gel and reminds me quite a bit of the Neutrogena acne scrubs actually. The only thing i’d say about this scrub is that they intend you to use this every day and it’s just far too harsh for that. Proactiv doesn’t do any other cleansers so I would say use a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil most days and save this to use once or twice weekly.
Proactiv Solution Revitalising Toner
• Gentle alcohol-free toner helps balance skin tone and lifts away dead skin cells and excess oils• Soothes your skin with natural botanicals
The Revitalising Toner is a clever little product that uses 6% glycolic acid in order to clean any residue off your skin and then allow any products you apply afterwards to absorb deeper into the skin, making them work more effectively. Again this is a nice product and I love that it doesn’t contain any noticeable fragrance or alcohol.
Proactiv Solution Day Lotion
• Specially formulated to keep blemishes under control throughout the day• Salicylic Acid gets to the source of the problem to dry up blemishes and help prevent blackheads and whiteheads from forming
This is a nice, light moisturiser that really does keep mild acne at bay. Unlike it’s predecessor, it’s gentle enough to be used daily without drying out or irritating the skin. The only issue I had with this is that I wasn’t sure when to use it. For night, I prefer the Repairing Night Lotion and during the day it’s a bit much to wear this moisturiser as well as sunscreen. Still, this is a nice simple treatment lotion for acne prone skin.
Proactiv Solution Repairing Night Lotion
• Formulated with Salicylic Acid to help prevent future breakouts while you sleep• Contains Retinol to equalise skin tone and reduce the appearance of pore size• Vitamins D and E help alleviate the affect of free-radicals caused by sunlight
This is the only thing from the old Proactiv line that I liked and it’s one of the first products I ever reviewed here on SCforM! I was glad to have another tube of this in my posession as I forgot just how good this stuff was. You can read my review here.
_____________________________________________________
All in all, this line is a huge improvement on the previous one that relied heavily on benzoyl peroxide. Individually, the products are formulated well and garner some pretty great results. However, as with many of these 3-step lines, it’s unlikely that you’re going to like everything and at the very least i’d say you’re going to need another cleanser. In addition to that, while the milder salicylic acid is a good addition, it means that by design this line isn’t going to work well for moderate to severe acne. However if you have minimal to mild acne and want to have your entire routine sent to you in a neat little box, this is definately a good option for you.
There are a lot of add-on products that Proactiv also sells such as the Mattifying Gel and body products etc. I’ll be reviewing a couple of those in the future. You can buy Proactiv online, they even have a UK website which I didn’t know existed until recently – I used to order mine from the US!
