Review – Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Sunblock SPF 55

This is officially my favourite sunscreen American drugstores have to offer. If you’re looking for a fantastic suncreen you can grab locally for cheap, buy this!

Read my thoughts after the jump!

The first thing you’ll notice when using this sunscreen is how light, runny and generally liquidious it is. There isn’t even a bit of greasiness with this sunscreen and it feels almost weightless going on. As for the finish, it isn’t oily or greasy in the slightest but it isn’t actively mattifying like Japanese sunscreens either. Think of this as a very very light moisturiser; it won’t make you greasy but if you have an oily t-zone you may still need to blot or use an oil control product over it.

The best thing about this is the texture. It’s by far the lightest and runniest sunscreen you’ll find in an American drugstore – really easy to use.

For all the fantastic texture, this sunscreen still manages to give your skin excellent sun protection with a PPD of 10-12. This means great protection from UVA rays, the ones that prematurely age your skin and create an uneven skin tone (age spots, darkened acne scars etc). In fact this sunscreen actually provides higher protection than my oft-recommended Shiseido Sun Protection Lotion and in fact more than the majority of sunscreens on the American market at the moment. Europe and Asia are a different story as they have access to chemical sun-filters unavailable in the US for now which provide extremely high protection.

Right, after that preamble, here are the pros and cons!

Pros

  • Low shine
  • Great UVA protection
  • Really light, runny texture
  • Dries quickly on the skin
  • Not much/any white cast on medium/tanned skin, you may need to mix it with a liquid bronzer if you have dark skin.
  • Easily available in drugstores

Cons

  • The bottle is pretty small
  • It doesn’t actively control oil (but it doesn’t make you greasy either which is good!)
  • You must remember to shake this (there’s a little ball inside like a can of spray paint) or it separates.
  • It’s fragranced (which can irritate some people)

Overall, i’d say this is probably the best drugstore sunscreen for combination or oily skin you can currently buy in the US. Even forgetting the ‘drugstore’ bit, this is still an amazing sunscreen comparable and often miles better than a lot of the ones that cost far more. Definately worth checking out if you’re serious about protecting your skin from the sun and are looking for something easy to wear.

I believe this is available in Canada and Asia too. If you live in Europe, a comparable sunscreen would be the L’oreal Anti-Dark Spots Matte Fluid SPF50+ which has a similar finish with double the UVA protection.

Note: This sunscreen also comes in an SPF70 version but anything over SPF50 isn’t offering you any extra protection. Even SPF100 wouldn’t offer you more protection than SPF50 in a day, that’s why European and Asian law stipulates that manufacturers simply list SPF50+ for sunscreens that exceed that mark in order not to mislead people. The US is taking a bit longer to catch up on that one.

Here in Asia there is a similar product called Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Complete UV Waterlight Lotion SPF50+/PA+++. I bet both are the same with different packaging. There are 2 versions...one for oilier skins and the other with drier skins. I tried the one for oilier skins and found it to be fine but the fragrance was really strong. I still prefer the Biore sunscreen.

I am currently using Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Complete UV moisture lotion SPF50+/PA+++. It is pretty good, although I am not exactly happy with its oil control.

Since I'm using Olay Regenerist, I think it's quite moisturizing. I find myself being a bit more oily in day-time, especially on my nose. So I decrease my usage, and only put it on sparingly and now it's not so oily.

Anyway, I will try Sofina and other sunscreens you recommended later. Thanks again!

In the US, they have an SPF 90+ Regular version, which I love. The U.S. versions are not perfumed.

I am wearing the Regular SPF 55 today, in fact. I have the SPF 85, which I bought in the US, and a Spray On SPF 70 that I use on my arms and legs.

    Great stuff!

Quick question, would you say this is less greasy than the new formulation of the Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion SPF 60? I ran out of the SPF 55 version and was told it was discontinued in favor of the new SPF 60 with ensulizole.. I tried it today and it felt SO GREASY compared to the 55! I used 1/4 teaspoon's worth and it never even absorbed fully, let alone turn matte.

@Sleepie, I been using the Shiseido Very High Sun Protection Lotion SPF50+ (I mistook it for the Ultimate version) and had a similar experience because it was sticky and heavy plus it made my face shiny.

Should you apply this product underneath or on top of a daily moisturizer/aftershave lotion?

@JGP On top. If you have combination or oily skin, you may just want to skip the day moisturiser all together!

Hi, I was wondering if you tried the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch? Do you think there will be a big difference on the effectiveness between this one and the liquid?

    Thanks.
