How to get a bright and even skin tone.

755737f520 How to get a bright and even skin tone.

Achieving and maintaining an even skin tone may seem like a pretty trivial thing as opposed to having – say – blemish or wrinkle free skin. However when it comes to looking younger it’s one of the most effective things you can do for your skin!

This post goes into a lot of depth, I highly recommend reading Even Skintone – A Beginner’s Guide if you’re new to this. Then you can come back here to look for more information if you’re interested as well as more product recommendations. So click here and then come back afterwards!

Dermatologists agree that having an even skintone – free from acne scars, hyperpigmentation, melasma etc – can make somebody look as much as 10 years younger. Younger skin tends to have a smooth and uniform colour, it’s only until we age that accumulated skin damage begins to appear on the surface on the skin – making us look worn and a bit… well, old!

Products aimed and brightening and evening out skin tone have exploded on to the skincare market recently with every line offering at least one product that promises results. The problem is that firstly, a lot of these products don’t do much and secondly you need to fit these products into a specific routine in order to garner decent results.

So, being the kind soul that I am, i’m going to walk you through the steps you can take to achieve a brighter, more even skintone with the least amount of guesswork!

Firstly, if acne scars are your main issue at the moment then definitely read this post which covers a lot of what i’m going to write here but with a focus on scars rather than general skintone and patches of hyperpigmentation. You can always come back to this post afterwards. So let’s start by looking at what the perfect routine for even skin tone looks like:

Day:
Topical antioxidant or Tone correcting treatment
Sunscreen

Night:
Exfoliation product
Tone correcting treatment

Pretty simple right? Now it’s just a case of finding out which products to put in those places and you’re good to go! Don’t forget, if you have other skin issues or you have a routine you like: you can just take one or two things from this article and put them into your exisiting routine!

Now, let’s talk details. I’ve split each section into an intro and then some recommendations. Feel free to skip to the recommendations if you dont want to hear me waffle.

Prevention

It makes sense that if your goal is to brighten up and even out uneven skin colour, you’re going to need to prevent it from getting darker again. This is why you need sunscreen. Not only do you need sunscreen but you need a sunscreen with a high level of protection.

By protection I don’t mean SPF (although that’s important to avoid burning), I’m referring to UVA protection that is measured by PPD (persistent pigmentation darkening, read my sunscreen post here). A good PPD for everyday wear that’ll protect you from sun damage is anything above an 8, a fantastic PPD is anything above 15 which will protect you even if you work outdoors, are prone to melasma or live in tropical climes.

As a rule, most Asian sunscreens (and increasingly American ones) list the PA+++ symbol to indicate a PPD greater than 8. With European sunscreens, a specific PPD number is usually listed on the tube or indicated by a 5* rating (which means a PPD over 15).

There are a few sunscreens available in the US with a good level PPD (which i’ll list) but you’re going to find the best ones in Asian and European brands. It’s easy to buy any of them online. The reason why you can’t get many sunscreens with amazing PPDs in the US is because the FDA is slightly behind on allowing certain chemical filters to be used in sunscreen. So, a few things to bear in mind with sunscreen:

  • Your SPF needs to be enough to prevent you from burning (15, 30 or 50+).
  • Your PPD needs to be greater than or equal to 8.
  • You need to apply it liberally (thich is why it can be difficult to find a good sunscreen; all sunscreens are great when you apply a pea sized amount but problems with finish only set in when you’re using a dime sized amount).
  • As with all skincare, apply to your face as well as your neck – you don’t want your face to look brighter than your neck.

Sunscreen recommendations.

From left to right:
  1. La Roche-Posay Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizing Cream – SPF 15, PPD 15 and available in the US. A fantastic protection sunscreen unless you’re prone to burning easily. This is a moisturising sunscreen so maybe not the best for oily skin.
  2. Shiseido Very High Sun Protection Lotion – With a PPD of 8-10 and available worldwide, this is a great sunscreen for day-to-day protection. What really puts this one apart from others is the finish – it’s light, watery and dries totally matte! There’s a moisturising cream version too.
  3. L’oreal Solar Expertise Anti-Dark Spots Matte Fluid – A UK exclusive, this is lightweight, matte and easy to apply. Comes with a great SPF and a PPD of 20, read my review here.
  4. Bioderma Photoderm – This sunscreen has serious protection and a PPD that’s easily above 25, i’d reserve this for people very sensitive to the sun or people living in tropical climates that want to prevent any kind of sun damage. The finish can be a little greasy but there’s a version called AKN Matte for oilier skins.
  5. Boots No7 Anti Dark Spots SPF 50+ – This UK exclusive has a ridiculously high PPD (30+) and yet maintains a very nice semi matte finish. This sunscreen is slightly illuminating (it contains light reflecting mica but no shimmer) so avoid it if you’re excessively oily. My combination skin is fine with this, I just apply an oil controller on my tzone on top of this.
  6. Elta MD UV Clear SPF48 – A fantastic combination product that contains a nice lightweight sunscreen as well as 4% Niacinamide – a potent skin tone correcting ingredient! This is a US exclusive and has a PPD of 8 to 10.

Exfoliation
So now that we’re preventing the sun from creating or worsening uneven pigmentation, we need to gently peel off the outer layers of skin that have uneven pigment to reveal the smooth skin underneath. Another benefit is that exfoliation enhances the penetration of any tone-correcting products you use on your skin afterwards (more on this later). There are many different methods to exfoliate the skin (a lot of them are mentioned here) and they are all effective.
  • Manual: Using scrubs, brushes or wash cloths. This method isn’t as invasive as a chemical exfoliation but, done correctly (i.e by not being too harsh on the skin) and regularly it can be very effective. Go for gentle scrubs you can use regularly rather than intense ones that you can only use once a week before your skin falls off. Manual exfoliation is done solely with wash off products.
  • AHAs: We’ve talked a lot about these on SCforM, Alpha Hydroxy Acids dissolve the ‘glue’ holding dead skin to the fresh skin underneath. Glycolic acid is the most popular AHA any very effective in concentrations over 5% and something like Lactic or Mandelic acid is a slightly milder yet still very effective option. AHAs can be used in cleansers (just leave them on for a minute or so to get the full effect) or with leave-in products such as serums or creams.
  • Retinoids: Prescribed retinoids (a form of Vitamin A) are probably the most effective exfoliants but can be too irritating for some to use. If you’d like to try them, consult your GP or dermatologist. Less potent yet still effective are OTC (over the counter) retinoids in concentrations greater than 1.0% such as Avene Diacneal.

Exfoliator Recommendations.

From left to right:
  1. Anthony Logistics Glycolic Cleanser – This is a really nice glycolic cleanser. Just massage it in, leave it on for a minute or two and then rinse off!
  2. Alpha Hydrox 12% AHA Souflee - A lightweight moisturiser that contains a very good amount of glycolic acid, just apply a little bit of this at night. You might want to skip using this every other day if this is your first AHA product as it can take time for skin to adjust to the level of AHA.
  3. Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant – This is an enzyme powder that you shake into your damp palms and then use to exfoliate your face. It’s thorough yet gentle enough to use every day. Great for sensitive skin!
  4. Shiseido Facial Brush - This facial brush is great if you don’t want to fuss with separate exfoliants and want a thorough clean. Read my review here.
  5. Acne.org AHA Lotion – A 10% concentration of glycolic acid in a lightweight moisturiser, developed especially for acne-prone skin so it’s unlikely to clog or irritate your skin.
  6. M2 Skin Refinish – A personal favourite product. This lightweight treatment containing Mandelic and Malic acid is potent, effective yet very gentle on skin. Read my review here.

Treatment

Simply exfoliating and using a decent sunscreen will go a long way in evening out your skintone but using an anti-pigmentation treatment will give your results a massive boost so it’s a good idea to include one (or two) in your routine!

There are many different ingredients and concentrations to bear in mind when choosing the best anti-pigmentation product so i’m going to focus on the best ones and give you a few good recommendations. You can use pigmentation faders underneath your eyes too for dark circles so long as the product doesn’t contain any acids or retinol.

  • Antioxidants – Topical antioxidants are excellent for the skin; they prevent free radicals from damaging the skin through UV exposure and add a boost to your sun protection when used underneath sunscreen. The most potent antioxidant in relation to evening out skin tone is Vitamin C. In concentrations greater than 10%, Vitamin C has been proven to even out skin tone and provide the conditions for collagen synthesis too!
  • Botanical Lighteners – These ingredients (in the right concentrations) inhibit the process by which the skin picks up pigment. The most well-known and documented ones include Arbutin, Kojic Acid, Mulberry Extract and Licorice Extract. These are very effective at evening out skintone and well worth looking in to.
  • Copper Peptides – Copper peptides (read about them here) will, in the right concentration, provide a gradual evening of skin tone. This is an ingredient – alongside Niacinamide – that is a great multi-tasker!
  • Niacinamide – Ive written an in-depth post about this amazing ingredient here, it’s definitely worth checking out. If it’s in concentrations of 4 to 5% you’ll see a definite pigmentation fading effect. This is one of my favourite ingredients for fading pigment because it does so much more for my skin such as calming acne flares and minimizing irritation between shaves.

Treatment Recommendations.

From left to right:

  1. Nia 24 Skin Strengthening Complex – A very advanced product and my new favourite thing. It contains a concentrated form of Niacinamide in a 5% concentration, this is excellent stuff that will even out skin tone as well as calm down irritated skin, reduce wrinkles and breakouts.
  2. Dermaquest Skin Lightening Serum – This serum is fantastic and contains a great blend of potent botanical pigmentation faders as well as glycolic acid. Highly recommended, i’ve repurchased this a few times over for friends and family.
  3. Skinceuticals Phyto+ – Pricey but worth it. This contains a cocktal of concentrated pigmentation faders in a liquidy serum. This stuff works very very well, the gold standard when it comes to evening out skin tone.
  4. Vichy Bi-white Serum -  This is a moisturising serum that contains Vitamin C, Liquorice Extract and a few other botanical lighteners in order to even out skin tone. Works well and is great for drier skin.
  5. Kiehl’s Powerful-Strength Line Reducing Concentrate – This contains a 10.5% concentration of Vitamin C in a stable formula and container. This is an amazing Vitamin C serum and in my opinion well worth your cash, you can expect an evening of skin tone and reduction of fine lines at this concentration.
  6. Skinbiology Super GHK Serum – My favourite copper serum at a good enough concentration to help even out skin tone. Read my review here.
And that’s it!

Apologies if that was a bit much to take in all at once but it’s a complex subject and hopefully you have enough information to get started!  Again, here’s what the perfect routine geared towards evening out your skin tone would look like, feel free to add your own elements like moisturisers or BHA products or take bits away based on your own preference! Don’t forget, if you have any other skin issues or have a routine you already like, you can just take one or two things from this article and put them into your exisiting routine.

Day:
Topical antioxidant or Tone correcting treatment
Sunscreen

Night:
Exfoliation product
Tone correcting treatment

Remember, evening out your skin tone is a gradual process. Expect your skin to look brighter and clearer within a few weeks but as for fading scars and hyperpigmentation; that’ll take a bit of time. Stick with it and you’ll see the years sliding off your face and neck!

What a FAB Post!! I use the Bioderma SPF 100 when I'm in Oman, and the LaRoche-Posay sunscreen in the UK. I also love the L'Oreal spray sunscreen for my arms and legs.

Very comprehensive! You might want to check for a tiny grammatical error in the second paragrah….

Next post suggestion: Laser treatment to get rid of hyperpigmentation, broken capillaries, and fine lines!

Thank you for this post! I use components of each category but as I'm running out I definitely need to pick up more! I exfoliate manually right now with a LUSH Scrub (Dark Angels) and sometimes my Clarisonic Brush but I think I may pick up the Acne.org AHA lotion as well. And now I am looking at serums :)

  4. Muichih says:

hi! i bought Nia 24 Skin Strengthening Complex because of your recommendation. is this product okay to use under the eyes?

  5. Rick says:

Great article, one question though out of all the Treatment Recommendations that you picked which one is best for acne scars not the hyper pigmentation ones but clearly the more serious cars.

  6. D.D. says:

@Muichih – Yes, it should be fine to use there.

@Rick – They're all pretty effective for acne scars but maybe try something out of Phyto+, Kiehl's or Dermaquest.

Love this blog learning so much about skincare for men and its about time I could go somewhere for men’s skincare suggestions and products instead of always browsing sites clearly for women.

Thanks for the suggestion, leaning towards Dermaquest or the Phyto+. About adding a tone correting treatment where will it fit into my regimen? Can I use it before or after the Paula’s Choice 2% BHA in the morning and before or after the M2 at night?

Right now I follow your mild to minimal acne routine

      AM
      Cleanse / Cetaphil
      Treat / Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid
      Moisturise / Jojoba Oil
Sunscreen / La Roche Posay Anthelios 60

      PM
Cleanse / Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash Redness Soothing Scrub
      Treat / M2 Skin Refinish 20%
      Moisturise / Cerave

    Hi All,
Just wanted to comment on the Dermaquest Skin Lightening Serum. I had large pimple on my cheek which resulted in a pigmentation acne scar after the pimple was gone. I promptly bought the serum and applied it religiously day and night. It’s been almost 4 weeks of using it and the scar has noticeably lightened. Great product!!

(this comment has been reposted from the other skin tone page, for the benefits of others to read)

    what a fabulous article!!

due to limitations on products at the country im staying in, ive managed to only find a few of your suggestions. im planning on using estee lauder’s advanced recovery serum and avene’s cleanance k as an exfoliator. do u think these would work? xxx

  11. JacieParis says:

I have very sensitive, pale, acne-prone, freckled skin with rosacea. Most products, especially very “chemically” ones, are especially rough on my skin. I still purchased the LadySoma Renewal Serum on a whim in an attempt to lighten the new age spot on my cheek and was very happy with the results.

I can’t use it EVERY night, as it causes the rosacea to flare up, but using it every other night has evened out my skin tone, did not break me out, lightened my age spot and some of my lighter freckles!

I no longer have oily and dry spots on my skin either- something I’ve dealt with my entire life.

  12. HI,is this skincare for evening out your skincare work for women??? Very good article.
