Gillette Fusion Power Gamer VS. Quattro Titanium Precision Freestyle

verus Gillette Fusion Power Gamer VS. Quattro Titanium Precision Freestyle

Gillette recently sent me one of their Fusion Power Gamer razors, boasting it’s superiority to its closest rival – the Wilkinson Sword Quattro Titanium Precision Freestyle and going as far as to send me both razors in order to compare the two.

Now that’s confidence! Well I couldn’t pass up the chance to compare the two so here are my findings.

Looks and design.

Gillette: The Fusion Power Gamer is ugly. The Gamer version is exactly like the regular Fusion Power but with white, black and orange colour scheme that looks a bit cheap. However the razor itself has a nice weight to it and you can tell it’s made well. It comes in a cheap plastic resting case.

Quattro: The Quattro Titanium Precision Freestyle is clearly the better looking of the two. It’s sleek, black and encased in rubber. The razor itself, again, feels well made and this one comes with a handy holding dock that you can fix to your mirror with suction cups.

Blades
Gillette: The Fusion Power has a five blade shaving surface, the blades are as well made and sharp as you’d expect them to be. The blades are thinner than the Quattro Titanium ones which I think allows for a closer and more thorough shave. However these dainty blades also get clogged up a bit more and tend to become dull a tiny bit faster than the Quattro. Gilette blades are expensive (for blades) so this isn’t welcome news.

Quattro: The Quattro Titanium Precision has a four blade shaving surface, they’re sharp and durable. These stayed sharper for longer than the Gilette but the design didn’t seem to shave as well. I’ve used four-blade razors that perform very well so I don’t understand what the problem is.

Features

Obviously the Quattro Titanium Precision Freestyle has better features than the Gillete razor which simply vibrates (whether the vibration helps is up for contention, I’m not so sure about it). The Quattro comes with a hair trimmer on the opposite end that even includes a cover that you can move to trim more or less hair. I gave it a whirl on my sideburns and it worked really well (and i’m definitely not a hairdresser), i’m sure it’d be useful in a pinch but the size is too small if you’re going to try and trim larger areas of your face with it. As the name says, this is for precison work and it does the job well.

Shave

I shaved with each razor for a week and then spent a week shaving my face half and half with both razors. I shaved every day or every two days.

Quattro: The Quattro, for all its features, just didn’t give me a decent shave. I don’t shave against the grain and this razor didn’t give me a close enough shave without going against. If I had to use one word to describe the results, i’d say uneven. With daily shaving, I found that my skin didn’t get very irritated with this razor but that’s probably because I wasn’t getting a full shave from it

Gillette: I was so used to having to go over some spots twice with the Quattro razor that I ended up being a bit over-zealous with the Fusion and cut my neck. This is a sharp razor. It glides across the face easily, gives you a close shave in one pass with minimal pulling of skin. The only problem with this is that the blades are so sharp that daily shaving with it made my skin quite irritated a few days in but nothing that couldn’t be mediated with the tips I listed here.

Conclusion

The Quattro Titanium Precision is stylish, durable and the built-in trimmer makes this a fantastic 2-in-1 product. However the place it fell flat for me was in the actual shaving and isn’t that what a razor’s meant for? I wouldn’t repurchase this. Well maybe if I was going on holiday and anticipated some emergency trimming situation.

The Fusion Power Gamer is ugly but it’s great at what it does. The vibrating feature might be useless (I thought I felt a difference in the quality of my shave when using it but didn’t see one) but it’s a nice placebo effect. Vibration aside, it doesn’t take away from the fact that the Fusion Power Gamer provides a nice smooth shave with no irritation (unless you’re shaving daily which can be the case with most razors). The only major drawback for me is how bloody costly it is to keep replacing the heads of the razor (which do need to be replaced frequently). There’s always the Razor Pit but i’d rather not have to buy a separate product. I’ve repurchased this plenty of times before and will do in the future.

Hello, I’m Pedro and I work for Gillette. I was very interested to read your blog post about the Fusion vs the Quattro. We appreciate the time you’ve taken to do this and we’re delighted that you felt the Fusion gave the superior shave. One point you mentioned was cost and I wanted to follow up with you on this as I know it a key point for our consumers. We’ve recently commissioned a study using independent third party data (from Kantar and the IRI) to investigate how much shaving with Gillette actually costs and they found a figure of 75p a week – great value for shaving with Fusion. The financial website This is Money (the Daily Mail’s independent personal finance site) ran the story – http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/bargains-and-rip-offs/article.html?in_article_id=502109&in_page_id=5&position=moretopstories

Hopefully that should shed a bit more light on the pricing issue. Please feel free to get in contact with me if you have any further questions on this or on anything Gillette related, best way is probably via Twitter – @GilletteUK

Well its nice to see the cost broken down like that but fact remains these fusion/proglide blades are ridiculously priced and putting lots of working class buyers off.
I mean £9 for 3 blades is out of control and always leaves me picking something cheaper up instead.
