EDIT: More tips here!

Facial redness can be the result of many things; irritation from shaving, rashes or the skin condition ‘rosacea’. There are many ways to fix this problem both in the long-term and short-term so keep reading for suggestions!

Facial redness from shaving, rashes, razor burn and general irritation.

1 Red Faced.
If you find that your face looks especially red after shaving, you should consider switching a few products in your shaving routine to conteract this.

Try using a shaving foam for gentle skin like my favourite Blue Eagle from Kiehl’s or the equally good Nivea for Men Sensitive Shaving Foam. It has a nice scent and gives you a slose shave without irritation – better than most high-end stuff.

Skip the aftershave and use a BHA product on your face to calm your skin down like the Clearasil Deep Pore Cleansing Pads.

If your face is irritated and red for whatever reason (whether it’s shaving or a rash) and you need it to clear up within minutes, pick up a tube of Clinique’s Redness Solutions Urgent Relief Cream. This treatment contains 0.5% Hydrocortisone Acetate and will calm down reactive redness in moments. Don’t use this as a regular treatment, only as an ‘as needed’ product when you need urgent relief.

Facial redness from Rosacea.

Unlike women with rosacea, men will find that their skin is more prone to redness around the nose. When applying your products, pay particular attention to the places where you are most prone to redness rather than just applying indiscriminately.

The best treatments for rosacea come prescribed from your doctor or dermatologist. Both Finacea and Metrogel work miracles for rosacea so check them out. Dermatologists will appreciate the research so ask specifically about those two products in relation to your rosacea.

Try Aveeno Foaming Cleanser Ultra-Calming, a nice gentle cleanser containing oatmeal to soothe your skin. Oatmeal has been documented to calm skin with rosacea.

If sunblock tends to irritate your skin, definately try Avene Redness Relief Soothing Cream SPF 25. This is an ultra-gentle day moisturiser with an SPF25 and a gentle green tint to instantly fade redness. After using this for a while you’ll notice that your skin appears calmer and less red in the mornings.

Quick fixes for both kinds.

3 Red Faced.
Instead of a night cream with a million different ingredients, keep it simple with Cetaphil moisturiser. This is gentle, soothing and won’t clog your pores.
Avene Thermal Water Spray is excellent at toning down excess irritation after a shave, just spritz a little on your face and neck.

The sizeable amount of Zinc in Sudocrem makes it excellent at toning down facial redness from both rosacea and shaving overnight. Smear a thin layer over red spots at night and wake up to calmer, less red skin. Also works well for acne, check out my review!

A cream with a green tint will balance out the redness in your skin. I like Clinique’s Redness Solutions Daily Protective Base SPF15. Just apply a bit of this on top of your moisturiser – not too much or the green tint will look a bit noticeable. You can apply it all over or just to specific areas.

Tinted moisturisers are a great cover-up for facial redness. The best ones don’t look like makeup at all, they simply even out your skin tone. Read my ‘Cosmetics – Base’ post for some suggestions and application methods.
