Dealing with sesitive skin.
Senstive skin can be difficult to deal with, it can become easily irritated at the slightest hint of ingredients such as fragrance in a product and can leave your face looking red and agitated. I’ve covered a host of excellent products in my reviews for shaving products and cleansers so i’m going focus today on moisturisers and treatments for senisitve skin.
Not only are these products excellent for sensitive skin, they can also be used successfuly on skin with irritation issues such as dermatitis.
Treatments.
Paula’s Choice Skin Relief Treatment
This product is excellent for those who are sensitive to regular BHA products and anyone who experiences post-shave redness and pain. This contains stabilized acetyl salicylic acid (better known as aspirin) which has an instant anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. This is great at toning down redness, preventing ingrown hairs and blackheads and soothing facial discomfot. Just swipe this on your skin after your shower/shave and your skin will feel instantly calm. See? I wasn’t kidding when I mentioned the aspirin facial mask! Read my post on facial masques to find out how you can make your own aspirin mask, excellent at toning down facial inflammation and redness.
Avene Thermal Water
I’ve raved about this many times but I’ll do it again one last time as this really is great for irritated skin. Just spray this directly onto inflamed areas to experience an instant soothing sensation and reduction in redness. This is great on-the-go as the spray is fine and won’t make your face look wet.
Nappy Creams
Read my review on this product to see how it could work for you. The key ingredient in this cream (and indeed most diaper creams) is the inclusion of high levels of zinc. Zinc is an excellent ingredient if you’re looking to soothe facial redness and irritation overnight. Just a apply a layer of this over skin overnight and the zinc will calm down any redness or irritation on your skin to reveal a more even tone.
Moisturisers.
Clinique Dramatic Difference Moisturisng Lotion
This simply formulated product comes highly recommended by those with both sensitive skin and dermatitis. It comes in a lotion formula for dry skin as well as a gel version for oilier skin. This is an excellent staple moisturiser that will not irritate whilst providing good levels of hydration. My only qualm with this is that the Dramatic Difference Moisturising Gel that I used to use tended to leave my face looking oily by midday but that’s easily rectified with a piece of blotting paper.
Dr Hauschka Quince Day Cream
The doctor Hauschka brand is enjoying a lot of celebrity-related popularity at the moment and is a great addition to your regime if you have sensitive skin and enjoy purchasing natural products. This cream is excellent for those with dry/normal sensitive and easily agitated skin. Instantly soothing and with a pleasent scent that does not irritate.
Vitamin E Oil
Recommended for the most sensitive skins and especially for those prone to dermatitis. This is a simple, no-frills moisturiser that will hydrate even the dryest skin without a hint of irritation. Just massage a few drops of this oil into your face at night – massaging it into damp skin post-shower will increase penetration if you have very dry skin. The picture above is the Vitamin E Facial Oil from The Body Shop which I have personally tested and love as a night moisturiser but any Vitamin E oil will work just as well. By the way, when it comes to any other skincare from The Body Shop, steer clear. The line is overpriced and the products don’t work very well. Try their body products instead.
Cetaphil/CeraVe products.
The Cetaphil and CeraVe product lines both come highly recommended by dermatologists for dealing with sensitive skin and are a good place to to start out when buying products for your sensitive skin. Highlights include the Cetaphil sunscreen and moisturisers from both brands.
When dealing with sensitive skin you have to take into account the fact that your skin can not tolerate harsh or irritating ingredients. Don’t try to make what works for others work for you, your best bet is to go for simple yet effective skincare like those listed above.
